The 3 C’s of Homeschooling: Courage, Commitment, Consistency
Do you ever feel like homeschooling is a bit too much? If so, you’re not alone, even if it feels that way. After a few years of homeschooling, feeling like I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall, I realized I needed to take a look at our schedule, how we were using it, and what I needed to do to keep my sanity and my children’s. I sat down and figured out what was really important and what wasn’t. You might think everything is important, and it is, but some things need to be put in their place. I want to share how I narrowed everything down to the 3 C’s: Courage, Commitment, and Consistency.
The first C I had to get in order was Courage. I had to admit that I didn’t have courage and that I needed to rely on God. The first step I took was to read and read about homeschooling. I wasn’t looking for all the answers; I just needed some directions. After researching, I decided that if this is what I’m going to do, then I need to trust God and dig deep in myself to find the courage to homeschool. I learned that if I trusted God every day, he would give me the courage to homeschool.
The second C, Commitment, is where the real work begins. I had to commit to educating my children. I had to commit to trusting God. I had to commit to making sure we had curriculum, plans, and a routine. Honestly, this was the hardest for me, out of all three. Not because I can’t commit to doing something, but because I wanted to feel God’s loving hand guiding me and teaching me every single day. Even on the toughest days, I had to commit, even if it was just snuggling on the couch and reading to my children. On those days, if that’s all we got done, then it was a successful day. I committed that day to staying the course.
The third and final C, Consistency, is about keeping things steady. Life happens, and it usually happens when you least expect it. I had to learn early on that if I kept a steady rhythm to our week, then it was successful. Consistency is just about getting up every day, trusting God, and trusting yourself. We all have different routines and rhythms, but having consistency is what makes it all work.
Remember, it’s not what you did that makes a difference, it’s how you did it…Courage, Commitment, and Consistency.
